Goal Setting

Four strategies can help you to develop an effective action plan.

* State your goal in very specific terms that you can accept

* Plan backwards from your goal for the best results

* Confront your fears and expectations immediately and progressively

* Put your plan on paper and into action as soon as possible

Your goal

Planning a career move is much like mapping your route for a road trip.

If you don't know where you are going, you can't decide how to get there, but if you do know where you are going, you'll get there faster.

Goals like "Go back to school" are too general and not specific enough. You have to translate these goals into specific statements such as "Enter a college accounting program by next fall" or "For the next two months, search for work in the computer securities field." You have to know exactly what you want to do and when to go about it.

Plan Backwards

One of the best ways to move forward is to plan backwards. Start by asking yourself if you can accomplish your goal today. If you can't why do you think that is? What do you have to do first? Is there something you have to do before that?

Keep thinking backwards like this until you arrive at tasks you could do today. This will help you to attain the goal's starting point.

For example, if your goal is to take a two-year business administration program, could you start today? No, you have to be accepted to the program first. Could you be accepted today? No, you have to apply first. Could you apply today? No, you have to decide which post-secondary institutions to apply to. Could you decide today? No, you have to do some research first and so on. I could do this all day but you get the point.

Don't worry if your list of things to do becomes several lists.

Deal with your fears and expectations of yourself

Look over your list of things you will have to do to achieve your goal. Do you believe that you can do it? If you have doubts, take some time to think them through first.

Are your expectations realistic? Have you succeeded or failed at tasks that were similar to this before? What can you do to improve your chances of success this time around? For example, if there is a good chance you will not follow through with your plans, you have to ask yourself why.

Are you a professional procrastinator? If so, what can you do to make sure that you will keep going until you reach your goal? Are you afraid of failing?

If so, work at improving the skills you will need. Or test the waters by taking an evening or distance education course before you sign up for a whole program. If you are having trouble identifying your fears or figuring out how to deal with them, talk to people you trust. Ask for their suggestions, but always make your own decisions.

Put your plan into action from to do list

By this stage, you probably have more than one list of things to do and, if it is necessary, some plans for avoiding or dealing with potential problems. Now you need to put them all together into one comprehensive plan. You must list tasks in the order in which you must complete them and set deadlines for the completion of any major plans. Successful career planners keep themselves on track using a variety of methods, such as:

* marking tasks on a monthly calendar (noting important dates such as application deadlines or action plans)

* making weekly or daily lists of things to do and cross off tasks as they are completed

* using a computer program to create timeline charts which give you your time limits for task completion

* Using a commercial appointment book or a notebook; even a palm pilot with a new page for each day or week.

Use whatever methods work best for you. If it is absolutely necessary, ask a friend to check on your progress occasionally or question you on your successes because you are more likely to get things done if you know you'll be asked about it.

Now you have learned all that you could want to set successful career goals. If you follow the things in this section and have remembered the previous sections, you will do just fine because there is nothing to hold you back now.

The first thing you need to do is be aware that you need to step out of your comfort zone. No one has ever accomplished anything of significant value without stepping outside of their comfort zones. Why would you be any different?!

If you are ready to give yourself a real challenge, and achieve something of phenomenal value, go on to the next step.

2. What do you really want?...

Do you like your job? You better.

If you do not, you are going to have a heck of a time accomplishing anything in that situation. You really need to be enjoying your work in order to excel at it. If you don't (as is the case with many I work with) you should honestly think about shaking things up.

But let's say you LOVE your job. Here is what you need to do when setting a goal for it.

Turn off your logical mind. Don't worry about how you will achieve that goal. Just be sure this goal is something you REALLY want to achieve! If you don't think earning an extra ten grand a year will allow you to live the life you desire, do not make that goal.

If you honestly believe you need thirty thousand dollars of extra income, go with it!

This is how you set goals for your job. Challenge yourself and make sure it is something you really want. Now you just need to act!

Nursing Education - Patient Assessment Skills

Nurses are trained to learn and apply patient assessment skills. These skills are the cornerstone of being a proficient nurse. The knowledge and procedures for developing these skills are learned in the first two years of nursing school and honed in clinical as the student nurse takes on a greater patient load. The "Standards of Care" that are the basis of nursing include the following:

Standard 1. Assessment

In an assessment the nurse must use all of his or her senses. These include hearing, touching, visual, and therapeutic communication. The cephalocaudal approach is most always used. In other words, assessing a patient from head to toe. The nurse must self aware to be able to conduct a thorough assessment. Data collection forms the basis for the next step in standards of care which is diagnosis. A nurse must have all the necessary equipment, such as a scale, tape measure, thermometer, sphygmomanometer, a stethoscope and pen light. The setting is also very important in doing an assessment. If a client is nervous or anxious they may not be as willing to answer questions that the nurse asks or to be examined. Obtaining a quiet environment is not always possible, especially in an emergency situation. Therefore, the nurse must be very observant, and try to get as much pertinent data as possible to formulate an nursing diagnosis For example, when doing an assessment on a client that is complaining of severe stomach pain, asking them what foods they last ate would give the nurse more pertinent information than asking them how many brothers or sisters they have.

Standard II. Diagnosis

A nursing diagnosis is not a medical diagnosis. A medical diagnosis would be the medical condition of "Diabetes". Whereas, a nursing diagnosis would be, "Altered Tissue Perfusion", related to decreased oxygenation of tissues as evidenced by a pulse oximetry of 92% , secondary to the medical condition of "Emphysema". A nursing diagnosis is a formal statement that relates to how a client reacts to a real or perceived illness. In making a diagnosis the nurse attempts to formulate steps to assist the client in alleviating and or mediating how they respond to real or perceived illness.

Standard III. Outcome Identification

In this process the nurses uses the assessment and diagnosis to set goals for the patient to achieve to attain a greater level of wellness. Such goals may simply be that the patient now comprehends the regime of testing their blood sugar, or perhaps a new mother gleans a sense of security now that she has been instructed in the correct method of breast feeding. The nurse must plan the goals that the client is to achieve around the clients ability. For instance, the goal that a client will walk normally after two days of having knee surgery is unrealistic, in the sense that the client's knee will not be completely healed. However, the goal that the client will be able to demonstrate the correct use of crutches, would be more realistic. This goal is also measurable, since the patient will be in the hospital and the nurse can teach and observe a return demonstration. Therefore, the goals or outcomes for the client must also be measurable.

Standard IV. Planning

The planning standard is designed around the clients activities while in the hospital environment. Therefore the nurse must plan to teach and demonstrate tasks when the patient is free to learn. This would involve administering pain medication prior to learning to walk with crutches or waiting until after a patient has finished a meal before teaching on how to use a syringe. The atmosphere should be conducive for the client to learn.

Standard V. Implementation

This standard requires that the nurse put to the test the methods and steps designed to help the client achieve their goals. In implementation, the nurse performs the actions necessary for the client's plan. If teaching is one of the goals then the nurse would document the time, place, method and information taught.

Standard VI. Evaluation

Evaluation is the final standard. In this step the nurse makes the determination whether or not the goals originally set for the client have been met. If the nurse concludes that the goal or goals have not been met, then the plan has to be revised and documented as such. Goals therefore should be timely and measurable. If the client's goal was to use crutches successfully, and the client was able to perform a repeat demonstration for the nurse, then the goal was met.

The above standards are the cornerstone of the nursing profession. These standards take time and experience to learn and to implement. Experience is the best teacher, and a nurse should continuously strive for excellence in their care of patients, and recognizing how to help patients achieve a higher level of physical and emotional wellness.

9 Obstacles That Keep You From Achieving Your Goals

While you may have spent a lot of time working on your goals for the next year, there are plenty of things that are going to get in your way to achieving them.

Before we go any further let's establish the use of language here. Goals can be substituted with objectives, targets, outcomes, achievements, resolutions, aims, ambitions and any others you can think of. For the purpose of this report, the writer will use Goal.

How often have you started off the year, or next phase of your development with good intentions, and some goals of what you want to achieve, only to find that somehow you never see to achieve them? What I will cover in this article is the 9 biggest obstacles that will get in your way. I will take each one in turn and explore what is behind it, why it is there, and more importantly the action you can take to put it to one side.

9 Obstacles That Keep You From Achieving Your Goals

What I will also do is evidence this be using the responses of a survey conducted with Sole Traders, and owners of Small and medium Enterprises (SME's), identifying the challenges they face in the coming year.

Although there are arguably hundreds of potential obstacles, 9 appear most commonly.

1. Lack of information
2. Lack of skill
3. Limiting beliefs
4. Well being
5. Other people
6. Own motivation
7. Time
8. Money
9. Fear

Why have a Goal?
If you needed more reason do set your own goals, in a study conducted on students in the 1979 Harvard MBA program, only three percent of the graduates had written goals and plans; 13 percent had goals, but they were not in writing; and 84 percent had set no goals at all.

Ten years later, the findings revealed that 13 percent of the class who had goals were earning up to 84 percent compared to those who had not set any. For the three percent who defined their goals and wrote them down, they were earning on average, ten times as much as the other 97 percent put together.

Some set goals that are too general. These are, in reality, fantasies common to everyone. Goals, on the other hand, are clear, written, specific, and measurable.

What is a Goal?
Other names that are used, explore others use of language. Why do we have them? Different types of goal - towards/ away from.

Some goals are called away from goals. These are usually framed in the negative. Here are a few examples.
o I don't want to smoke anymore
o I don't want to be unfit
o I don't want to be overweight
o I don't want to be broke

Now let's reframe them in the positive
o I am a non smoker
o I am fit and health
o I am at my ideal weight
o I can cover my bills

Notice the difference. They are stated in the positive and take on the assumption that you have achieved it already. By assuming "as if" your behaviour changes so that you are acting like to have already achieved what you wanted to do. What a great feeling to have even before you have got there. It also bolsters your motivation.

So now we have determined if our goal is towards something, or away from something. We have now stated it in the positive. This however is still not a very well detailed goal. We will now look at how we can make it more specific.

An ideal goal should be expressed in the positive, be time bound and specific. You may also like to consider, how will you know when you have achieved it, what will it feel like, what will the people around you be like? What will you do to celebrate it?

A goal must be time bound. When do I want to have achieved it? If that's when I want to achieve it, then when must I start? What is the first step I need to take? Who should I tell? Should telling that person be the first step? What skills or knowledge do I need to acquire along the way?

Goal size, is the goal too big to achieve? If so then breaking it down into smaller bite sized pieces may be the right approach.

How serious are you about this goal. On a scale of 1 to 10 (1 being low and 10 being high), how committed are you to this goal? If your answer is less that 7 you are unlikely to follow it up completely. What would you need to do to this goal to move it from a 7 to an 8?

Now that you have really defined your goal you are ready to go. Aren't you? So what's stopping you?

I will take each one of the potential obstacles in turn, and elaborate.

Lack of Information
Information can have one of two effects. With too much you can be overwhelmed, and can stop you from making a decision or taking the next steps. With too little information you are not able to put things into perspective, or look at the bigger picture. Identifying where you have gaps in your knowledge, and including this as part of your goal will move you closer to achieving it. There are several ways to obtain new information. Research, planned reading, listening to CD's, DVD's on a specific topic or networking with individuals who have the knowledge to share with you.

Lack of Skill
In order to move forwards you may have to pick up skills along the way. This need not be an enormous challenge. As part of your goal setting, understanding what skills you need to acquire, and how you will acquire them will form steps of your plan. This does not necessarily mean that you need to enrol on a course, although that is a great idea. Other alternatives such as on-line study, planned reading, shadowing a colleague in the workplace, or seeking advice from a friend can also help you obtain the skills you need.

Limiting beliefs
We all have a set of beliefs by which we live our lives. These are set in our subconscious at an early age. Sometimes these beliefs can hold you back and limit your ability to achieve you goals. Some common examples may be familiar to you.

Indecision or Procrastination- should I do one thing or another? This often results in you doing nothing. The limiting belief manifests itself as "I am not able to make decisions". Unable to make progress or stuck - when a way of working is no longer effective, you continue to use it and often forms a comfort zone, the limiting belief here could be " I can't/ won't change". Often people will state that "I don't deserve to be successful", or "that shouldn't work for me". Here we are seeing self sabotage and not valuing themselves and their own ability. These are only a few examples, but listen out for them and notice how many times you hear yourself saying things like this.

Well being
Despite your best efforts, there may be times when you are simply not able to pursue your goals. A sudden illness or injury can put set you back. When this happens you need to be realistic. Beating yourself up will not help, nor simply giving up. Take a little time to re assess your goal and consider what your options are now. How important is it that this goal is achieved within the original timeframe. Also consider how else you goal can be pursued, and who can help you during these times.

Other People
Quite often the people that are closest to us fear us achieving our goals. For them this means that you may change and that will also mean change for them. They may not be aware how important your goals are to you. If the people you share your time with for example family, friends, colleagues to not understand and support your goals, there is a chance that you may be influenced by this. If these people are adverse to change then they may well sabotage you plans.

Own Motivation
Although you may see out with the best intentions, after a while the novelty may wear off or there are other distractions. This may be down to a number of factors. Perhaps the goals that you set were too large, and needed to be broken down into smaller manageable chunks. Perhaps you are not getting the results, and need to consider what you doing that is are preventing you from moving forward. After continued effort you may feel that the goal is now actually something that do don't want, or at least the outcome.

In this case the goal needs to be reassessed. If it requires modification because circumstances have changed, then change it. If it no longer serves you, then don't waste your energy following up on something just because you started it.

Time
We all live in a world where we don't seem to have enough time. Many of us are "time poor", which means that we do not manage our use of time to get the best results. Quite often I hear from the people around me "I just don't have time to do x". How true is this statement really? Have we taken on too much, overcommitted ourselves and are embarrassed to say no? Perhaps, but I have another view.

If we approach our use of time without any structure we may just leap from one thing to another in no particular order. Without priority we will move from one thing to the next urgent thing.

There is also the aspect of distractions. This can be distraction from others who do not have the same aspirations as you. There is the distraction of telephone calls and emails. Quite often we busy ourselves with those things that are nice to do, but do not take us any further forward to achieving our goals.

Money
Money is a common reason for not pursuing your goal. Usually it is the lack of money that stops you. When you hear someone say "I can't afford it" or "I just don't have the money". These statements are usually offered up without much hesitation.

While I agree that it may well be true to some extent, what alternatives have they really explored and how else could the money be found? If you are really serious about achieving this goal, what lengths would you go to in order to find the money (legally)!

Let's turn this around and look at it from another perspective. What is it costing you to not have that goal in your life right now? For example being in that bad relationship or enduring bad health. If in achieving this goal it was going to get you that next job, or mean that you would get that 10% performance bonus at work, what efforts would you go to?

Fear
What do I mean by fear? There are the more straightforward examples. If you need to do something that takes you right outside of your comfort zone for the first time, which may well install fear into you.

Then there is the fear of failure. What will those around you think if you don't achieve you goal. How will you face them and maintain your integrity. Better to quit now that to see it through right? That way no-one will be able to judge me.

Another type of fear is the fear of success. What if I actually do it, and people find out I am a fraud? Is this goal something that I really want anyway? Self doubt comes into play and you try to talk your self out of it.

What evidence supports this in a business context?

In a recent survey conducted with Small and Medium enterprises (SME's) and sole Traders they were asked what they viewed as the biggest challenges facing them in 2010. All of those surveyed reported that they were partially successful in achieving their goals and objectives in 2009. 33% of these goals were significant, and the reasons for not achieving them were down to ill health, not asking for help, and lack of confidence in the economy amongst others.

Many of these goals were being carried on into the following year, some people carrying forward all of their goals. When asked what they were going to do in order to achieve those, 66% reported that they would try something different, and 33% would look for assistance.

So what is stopping these business people from moving forwards? Well from the sample surveyed the leading factors were Lack of skills, lack of knowledge, Health, Fear (of success/ failure) and Limiting beliefs.

Those that responded that they would look for assistance; it was equally split between others in their trade or profession, approaching a business coach, or contacting specialist suppliers. From those three options, certainly looking at what your competitors are doing may give you some clues. After all if someone in our sector is being successful look at what they are doing. Likewise specialist suppliers may be useful if the understand you goals and aspirations. However they may have another agenda, after all they are in business too.

However neither of these two approaches are focused on helping you achieve your goals, and neither of them hold you accountable in working towards them. This is where a Business coach can prove particularly valuable. They will assist you in defining and developing you goals, identify what is stopping you and develop strategies to help you deal with those obstacles when they come along.

The Business coach will also challenge you to check if you are working on goals that move you towards what you want, and keep you accountable to those goals. As a Sole Trader or SME often there is no one around with whom you can share your goals with, and discuss them.

One of the common objections to using a Business coach is the perceived cost, often saying "I can't afford that" or it's "too expensive". It is sometimes useful to look at this from another perspective. What is it costing you not to use a Business coach? If you can attach a value to achieving each goal then the services of an effective Business coach can be quickly calculated.

Let's go back to the survey respondents for a moment. Two of the challenges identified were lack of skills, and lack of knowledge. Suppose for a moment if a Business coach could help you identify what these gaps were, how to close them and then how to apply them to your Business what would that be worth? You may think that you can go it alone, but consider for a moment how would you clearly identify those gaps in skills or knowledge? How long would it take you? Which direction would you go? For example

In this report I have explained what a goal is and why it is important to have them. I have identified 9 obstacles that can potentially stop you from achieving those goals. These are:

1. Lack of information
2. Lack of skill
3. Limiting beliefs
4. Well being
5. Other people
6. Own motivation
7. Time
8. Money
9. Fear

I have evidenced how these manifest themselves, in a business context for Sole Traders and SME's, and looked at what strategies can be can be applied. And finally I have discussed how a Business coach may support the achievement of those goals.

Setting Goals - Why They Are Important

Goals are important at all stages of your life. They give you a feeling of happiness and satisfaction when you achieve them, and a feeling of enthusiasm and excitement as you set out to accomplish them. They are also important in improving many other aspects of your life: your self-image, self confidence, self-esteem, and your happiness in general. Not only do they improve your well-being, but they also improve you as a person. They increase your abilities, they strengthen your strong points and they help overcome your weaknesses, and also of importance, they make you forget yourself and your everyday problems. When you're busy trying to accomplish your goals, you're too busy to worry about personal problems.

The first thing you have to do is think seriously about what your goals are. Be realistic, but don't be afraid of shooting too high. Maybe it's to make a certain amount of money, or become an accomplished athlete, or a successful musician. Whatever it is, fix it firmly in your mind, then write it down. It's also important at this stage to picture yourself accomplishing it. This helps create a deep desire within yourself for achieving it, which is important. Let it become a burning desire.

Writing down your goal is the first step, but of course you also need to set up a program for accomplishing it, and it should also be written down. In short, you have to have a plan, and it must be detailed. Set it up so that you know what you are going to be doing each day, and what you will accomplish each week and each month.

Setting Goals - Why They Are Important

Finally, you have to give yourself a time limit. It's no good to work towards your goal without having any idea of when it is to be achieved. You have to say, "I will accomplish this by May 1," or whatever date you decide. Again, be realistic, so you don't feel let down if you don't reach it. If your goal is to lose, say, 30 pounds, then set yourself a goal of losing 10 pounds a month for three months.

Many people prefer to have milestones, or short-term, goals along their path to the final goal, and this is a good idea. For example, if your goal is to run a mile in 4:20, begin with a goal of five minutes, then try to improve to 4:40 over the next six months, and 4:20 over the following six months. This will give you a feeling of accomplishment as you reach each of the short-term goals, and it will help keep you on course.

One of the problems with goals is that many people eventually give up. For a goal to have meaning you must take it seriously -- very seriously. This means you must have determination, and one of the best ways to keep this determination is to develop tremendous enthusiasm and excitement for what you are doing. Don't let it become a chore; don't let it become boring. A good way to make sure you do this is to keep your eye on the final objective.

Persistence is the key; don't let anything stop you, and keep telling yourself that you're never going to give up until you have achieved what you want. Everyone has disappointments when they start out on a path such as this, but don't let them get to you. Don't let them get in your way. Success is possible if you keep at it.

Are You A Goal Oriented Person?

Would you consider yourself a goal oriented person? Are you the type of person who has to constantly strive for something, because if you do not you feel like you are lost. If so congratulations most people tend to not be goal oriented. If you are not a goal oriented person; you can learn how to become one.

A goal oriented person is a person who always succeeds in life. They have a strict mindset of what they want to accomplish and have. They are very smart people who are always willing to take the necessary risks to accomplish their dreams. Anyone can set a goal it is not hard. However what takes more is having the persistence to reach it. It requires hard work, dedication, faith confidence and courage. You must realize that you will not reach your goals overnight; sometimes it may take a long time in reaching the goals you set for yourself. They understand that they must have realistic time lines to reach your goals. The problem with most people is that they expect instant gratification. If something does not happen when they expect it to; they get upset and end up quitting working towards their goals.

A goal oriented person understands this and they have learned how to develop the burning desire that it requires to achieve what you desire in life.

Are You A Goal Oriented Person?

However sometimes when things take a while they may fall off of track. They understand that it is okay; and they always end up getting back on track. Can you honestly say this is how you approach your goals? You can learn how to accomplish anything you desire in life. However it all starts with a goal that you have a burning desire to achieve. Without the motivation; you will never accomplish anything you want.

Yes it will take some sort of risk after all pursuing your dreams can be a little risky. You must be able to get over the fear of failure and understand that you can achieve what you truly desire. They understand that they must set realistic goals if they are to accomplish them. Can you actually see yourself accomplishing your dreams?

There is nothing different between someone who achieves success and someone who does not. Except for the fact that the successful people are always willing to work towards their goals. So what are you waiting for? Your desires are right around the corner if you are just willing to begin taking small steps towards them. Why not begin now and be grateful that you did; rather than keep using excuses not to begin and then end up regretting that you never had the courage to pursue your dreams.

You will find that if you just take the first step; it is not as hard as some people make it seem. You will become passionate about life again; because you will realize that you do possess the potential to be do have anything you desire and you will pass on this belief to your children.

How Much Weight Should I Lose - Calculate Your Goal Weight

Wondering how much weight should I lose? If you're asking yourself this question then I'll assume you have decided that you want to lose weight. But you need to determine your objective even BEFORE you begin to lose weight.

Studies suggest that people who set realistic weight loss goals for themselves are much more likely to lose weight and keep the weight off for the long-term. We all know that crash diets and yo-yo dieting just do not work.

The key part to maintaining weight loss is choosing the right goal weight for you and your body type.

But how?

Use the Weight Loss Formula:

Setting a realistic goal for what you ideal weight should be it the first step in determining how much weight should I lose. Once your ideal weight is determined you simply need to find the difference between your current weight and your ideal weight and this will tell you how much weight you need to lose. Rather than strive to lose this total amount all at one time, break your weight loss down in to smaller ATTAINABLE goals. Setting unrealistic goals is one of the biggest hindrances to those trying to achieve weight loss. It can cause you to become discouraged, self-loathing and even malnourished too. Listen to my advice: setting the small goals will help you see success and ultimately help you stick with your program.

Calculating your BMI or "Body Mass Index" is an important 1st step to determining how much weight should I lose. There are websites available to help you calculate your own BMI but the basic calculation, or scientific formula is:

Weight in pounds x 703 divided by (height in inches)²

If that sounds complicated you just need to find a calculator!

Once you have calculated this number, you will be able to see if your weight level is within the ideal weight range of how much weight I should lose. Here are a few BIM tips:
If your BMI is under 18.5, than you are considered to be underweight The ideal weight range is between 18.5 and 24, you should try to get your weight to within this range If your weight is between 25 and 30 you are overweight and should try to lose those extra pounds If your BMI is over 30 you are considered to be obese and definitely need to consider losing those extra pounds before it leads to health problems

Use this BMI index as a reference to help you decided how much weight should I lose. There are many factors that also play a big role in answering this question. For example:
age body structure height gender healthy history

These certain factors can cause 2 people who have say, the same height but have different ideal weights that are right for them. You can also easily schedule an appointment with your doctor, who will help you determine what your ideal weight should be.

A slow steady weight loss is the best plan to set in place and has seen the most success. You should plan on losing an average of a couple pounds each week, until you reach that ideal goal weight. Remember, when asking yourself, "How much weight should I lose?" break it down into achievable steps, and choose a well-rounded Diet & Fitness Program that provides you with the resources, motivation and support you need to reach your goals.
